Expert forestry and grounds maintenance services, including hedge cutting, turfing & sports marking
The project began with a detailed site visit and consultation to assess the condition of an existing riverside bank, originally installed approximately 40 years ago. Over time, the timber sleeper supports had significantly deteriorated, compromising the structural integrity of the bank and reducing safe access to the waterway.
Working closely with the client, we identified the need for a full reconstruction that would not only restore stability but also incorporate more sustainable, environmentally responsible materials.
The key objectives for this project were clear:
A like-for-like reconstruction was agreed, with careful consideration given to both performance and visual appearance to ensure the finished result complemented the natural surroundings.
Our Environmental Team carried out the complete removal of the existing, degraded sleeper structure. The riverbank was then excavated and prepared for reconstruction.
To enhance both longevity and sustainability, the original creosote-treated sleepers were replaced with untreated European oak. This provided a robust structural solution while reducing environmental impact.
Geotechnical reinforcement (Geotech) was installed behind the new sleepers to strengthen the bank and improve long-term stability. Access steps were reinstated and finished with decorative gravel, creating a practical, non-slip surface while maintaining a natural aesthetic.
The completed project has delivered a fully stabilised and environmentally conscious riverbank solution. The combination of durable materials and modern installation techniques ensures the structure is built for long-term performance while blending seamlessly into its surroundings.
With improved access and enhanced safety, the client can once again enjoy their riverside space with confidence.
This project is a strong example of practical engineering combined with environmental responsibility. By upgrading outdated materials and reinforcing the structure using modern methods, we were able to deliver a solution that is both sustainable and visually appealing.
The result is a highly satisfied client and a riverbank that is fit for the future.
